What is Backup as a Service (BaaS)?

BaaS offers data protection for virtual machines (VMs), cloud-based workloads, endpoints and other workloads. These services can include installation, cloud hosting and continuous monitoring and management. Often, providers of BaaS will bill customers through a recurring/consumption model, aligning to operational expenditures (OpEx).

How does BaaS work?

BaaS offerings are often deployed and accessed in different ways depending on the workload. However, some software vendors (like Veeam) unify data protection across workloads and clouds to keep data portable and protected, regardless of where it resides.

Then, in the event of a failover, users can typically log into their provider’s portal, initiate a failover, and, within minutes, the planned VMs will be live and available in the provider’s cloud.
